Rio Ferdinand set to become professional boxer

Rio Ferdinand is expected to announce on Tuesday, that he plans to become a professional boxer.

The former Manchester United defender, has reportedly set up a “major news announcement” for Tuesday, at which he will confirm he is taking up a new sport at 38.

The Daily Mail reported the move would be for a “television project rather than as a serious sporting endeavour.”

Ferdinand, who is currently a football pundit for BT Sport and BBC, will have to apply for a license to box professionally.

In July, Ferdinand told Men’s Health that staying in top shape, allowed him to “free his mind” following his wife’s death in 2015.

After playing for United from 2002-2014, Ferdinand moved to Queens Park Rangers for one season, before announcing his retirement in 2015.
